We’ve got company! Guest Review of The Bridal Chair

Every once in a while we like to recruit others for help with reviews, and this is the first installment in the We’ve got company! series.  Today we’re joined by Ewelina Rutyna of Heavenly Good Books

The Bridal Chair by Gloria Goldreich is telling us a story about life of an artist, Marc Chagall, through the eyes of his daughter, Ida.

Ida is describing her eccentric father, his artistic way of living and also her overprotective parents. As the story progresses, we can see that the author tries to show the reader through the eyes of young Ida the scenery of politics, art, culture of france and USA during the War. She perfected the description of Paris in 1920s, where young artists came from all over the world to learn and show their art.

The first part of the story was the most interesting for me, where Marc Chagall, full of himself and his importance in the art world, refuses to flee France and seek refuge in New York City, far away from Hitler and his ways of curing the world. Only thanks to Ida’s stubbornness and help from other artists the family, March, his wife Belle and Ida, board a ship to New York City.

After their arrival, this story is not as captivating. It’s still interesting and shows how Ida is maturing and falling in love with Michael, but I missed her stubbornness there.

The main centre of the story is Ida’s relationship with her father and his wedding gift, a painting of a Bridal Chair.

The story for me deserves a strong 4 stars, for the well built descriptions and well developed characters.

Mama Reads, Hazel Reads episode 2: I Am Radar/Finding Felicia

Mama Reads: I Am Radar by Reif Larsen

Though beautifully written, I Am Radar became sluggish at times.  I rather suspect it’s more to do with my disconnection to the characters, I didn’t feel any attachment throughout the story to keep me interested. There were many intriguing references to historically accurate events that had me Googling like a madwoman, so for that I’m thankful. I enjoyed reading something that transported me to another time, I just couldn’t quite grasp why the author felt the need to go into so much detail as to detract from the narrative in the first place. 3/5 stars

Hazel Reads: Finding Felicia by Laurie Bloomfield, Illus. by Kari Bolt

Hazel liked seeing so many animals she recognized and made their corresponding noises.  She wanted to see more food, but would give this book 4 thumbs up:)
Mama’s thoughts-
This sweet little story follows Jack on a journey to find his cat Felicia.  Along the way he meets many fun characters and tries many new things, reminding kids that sometimes the search is part of the fun.  This had a very zen feel to me without preaching any sort of philosophy.  The illustrations were adorably rendered, and the publishers formatted the book well for kindle.  A smart read for the younger set, I’d put this down for 4 stars!

A Day Late and a Dollar Short: Consent Cover Reveal Post

Sometimes extenuating circumstances make us late to post the fun stuff, so without further ado, here’s your seriously cool cover for CONSENT:
Consent by Nancy Ohlin
Published by: Simon Pulse
Publication date: November 10th 2015
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult

Bea has a secret.

Actually, she has more than one. There’s her dreams for the future that she can’t tell anyone—not her father and not even her best friend, Plum.

And now there’s Dane Rossi. Dane is hot, he shares Bea’s love of piano, and he believes in her.

He’s also Bea’s teacher.

When their passion for music crosses into passion for each other, Bea finds herself falling completely for Dane. She’s never felt so wanted, so understood, so known to her core. But the risk of discovery carries unexpected surprises that could shake Bea entirely. Bea must piece together what is and isn’t true about Dane, herself, and the most intense relationship she’s ever experienced, in this absorbing novel from Nancy Ohlin.

I am the author of BEAUTY, a YA retelling of the Snow White tale, and ALWAYS, FOREVER, a YA retelling of Daphne du Maurier’s REBECCA. ALWAYS, FOREVER was originally published in hardcover as THORN ABBEY.

I’ve also contributed to several celebrity novels, including a New York Times-bestselling YA trilogy.

I’m currently hard at work on my next YA novel, which will be as mind-bending as ALWAYS, FOREVER (I hope!).

My favorite cures for writers’ block are long walks, long showers, popcorn, chocolate, and really expensive coffee. I talk to myself a lot while I write (you know, to make sure the dialogue zings).

About Dormaine G.

I may be a nurse by profession but I’m an author by heart. I have been writing stories for many years, both in my head and on paper because I’ve always had a love for books ever since spending Saturdays at the library as a young child. Within a book, the mind can travel to worlds of the imagination and the beyond. I finally took the plunge and published my first novel last year, a young adult urban fantasy titled “Connor” and an adult horror short story titled “Madame Lilly, Voodoo Priestess”. Both are the first editions of many to come as I stay locked up in my office in Colorado spinning more tales.

Mama’s Thoughts:
You might be wondering what on earth we’re doing reviewing a book about new adults participating in sexual acts…well I’m here to tell you this is not your average romance collection.  Here you will find some fantastic authors offering sensual scenes with their beloved characters, from the supernatural to the second chances.  A riveting read full of romance, Losing It! is a collection that showcases consensual relations between mature characters, something we can all get behind.  Giggity.

My personal favorites, Raine and Torin from Ednah Walter’s fabulous paranormal YA fantasy series Runes, have a wickedly wild scene with an ending to make you go “Argh!”  #damnthosenorns

Another wonderful thing about a collection with so many writers is that there’s a story for everyone.  Whether you like sweet seductions or paranormal passion, you will find something scintillating to savor!  5 stars!

Since Hazel is not 18, she sat this one out, so I’ll just leave you with some steamy teasers while you get ready to 1-click this anthology!

Losing It Milda

Special Edition: Finding North Blog Hop (with review and giveaway)

Sometimes you have to lose everything to find what you’ve really been looking for.

FN ebook cover

Katherine Zova spends her days patching up soldiers in the Alliance’s army while praying for time to heal the wounds on her own broken heart. Crushing loss numbs her waking hours and nightmares threaten her sanity when she closes her eyes. All she wants is to be free, but instead she’s forced to trade one cage for another.

Reynan Caverly wears his uniform only out of loyalty to his father, who in his quest to build a new America has little time to spend with his only son. Indifferent to his sensational Las Vegas lifestyle, all he wants is to feel a connection with someone. A seemingly impossible request—until the day he finds a girl with haunting eyes in a group of captured Alliance soldiers.

Some wounds cut too deep to deal with alone. Sometimes only love can heal. But in a country torn apart by civil war, nothing comes without a price. And for Kat and Reynan, falling in love may cost more than they’re willing to pay.

Mama’s Review:

Sometimes you read a book that grabs you by the neck and barely lets go the entire time you read it; your heart is in your throat and you just have to do whatever it takes to finish reading this book, though you’re afraid of ending up with your own heart breaking for the characters in which you’ve become so invested.  Finding North is one of those books.  You keep thinking you’ve figured things out and BAM! you’re smacked in the face by a clever twist or intriguing incident.  Furthermore, Gottlieb manages to write a dystopian that doesn’t feel the need to remind you every 5 minutes that you’re reading dystopian fiction.  You feel so immersed in the setting from her lush descriptions, which never become tedious.

And let’s just talk about our two main characters for a second.  Kathering Zova is not your typical broken down female needing a male to save her, in fact she’s stronger than many heroines while still needing reassurance and companionship in the wake of tragedy.  Enter Reynan Caverly an unexpectedly pleasant surprise in a war-torn world full of difficult choices and hellish circumstances.  He too has his share of tragedy to deal with, so they complement each other nicely.  And though he constantly feels this odd sense of protectiveness, Reynan never becomes overly jerk-wad-ish.  Mostly.

It’s been quite some time since I’ve read a fresh voice in ya fiction that wasn’t paranormal, and this was just the treat I needed after an epic book hangover (more on that in a later post.)  For now, I’ve got to say I highly recommend Finding North at a well deserved 5 stars!

Special Edition: Who is Your Favorite Villian? Hop from LiteraryAddicts.com

And what’s he then that says I play the villain?” ~Shakespeare

We readers know you can’t have good without evil, and thus all our tales end up with a hero and a villain…until they don’t.  Are there any stories you’ve read where there was not such a clear distinction between hero and villain?  For me, the best protagonists make us admit that we all have a bit of both, though we hope to pursue the good.

My favorite recent addition to the world of villainy is Mr. Gold/Rumplestiltskin from Once Upon a Time.  And to explain without spoilers, there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to this beastly trickster.  He has some nasty habits and selfish tendencies, but he always has love for his son.
