Of Ocean…
Cast into the sea at birth, human-born Ia found her adoptive family among the merfolk. While her underwater upbringing was peaceful, Ia’s blood-heritage and the strict societal rules of the merpeople lead her to wonder of the world above the waves.

And Ash…
When a storm lands Ia ashore, she discovers her body has transformed into the human she would have been. Taken in as property by a callous plantation owner, Ia works alongside the slaves until she can make her way back to the water. There is nothing Ia wants more than to go home, that is, until she meets a handsome, troubled man named Matthias, who has a touch that can be as kind as his tongue is harsh.

Torn between two very different lives, Ia must choose – stay in his world and risk her life for a love untested, or return to the familiar arms of the underwater world that raised her and risk losing what may be the greatest love she will ever know.

Will Ia’s choice lead to happiness or her destruction?

My word but this a beautiful book! Of Ocean and Ash lulled me with its siren song not letting me slip from its grip until the very last words.  At first I thought I was going to read an odd retelling of the Little Mermaid story, but this was wildly different. Imaginative, thrilling, and very adult, this was unlike anything I could have expected.  Ia is one of the most interesting female characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, and Mathias has all the major swoon I like in a hero, well sort of hero but not…you’ll have to read it to find out more.  A gorgeous depiction of an unprivileged life and what it means not only to be different, but to be Lesser.  This book isn’t a feel good fairy tale, but its message is incredibly important, not to mention heartbreaking.  Draeger has truly knocked it out of the ocean with her contribution to the Falling in the Deep collection! 5 stars

A.R. (Amber) Draeger resides in rural Texas with her husband, Josh, and son, Logan. When not writing or reading, she is watching reality TV shows or tromping through the nearby woods.

    • There are certainly moments in Ia’s story that are reminiscent of Ariel’s 🙂 It’s almost more like TLM in reverse, but also completely different. I haven’t read too many mermaid stories but this collection is full of some truly great work!
