A Gentleman and a Rogue
by Stephanie Burkhart
Royals Edmund and Alice Windsor return to 2011 only to discover their world is now powered by gasoline and electricity – not compressed natural gas. Their attempts to persuade their grandmother, Queen Anne II, falls on deaf ears. Taking matters into their own hands, they enlist Jonas Byron’s help and travel back to 1855 to set the time line right.
Now in Lincoln, Edmund is reunited with Lady Keira Russell, the love of his life, but if it isn’t one obstacle, it’s another. Keira does not want to fall in love with him again. Jonas Byron has taken up with Keira’s father to build a windmill, and Edmund’s brother, Richard, the Guardian of the Time Machine, has followed Edmund to ensure Queen Victoria makes the right decision when choosing the fuel of the future. Edmund has a choice – make mischief to ensure time marches to the beat of the right drummer, or trust in Keira and her belief that Queen Victoria will make the right decision on her own. Will Edmund lose Keira for good if he makes the wrong choice?
My word this was a fun read! Scandal and intrigue and time travel to boot. It took me a bit to get caught up as I haven’t actually read book one, though I feel it should be said that you can thoroughly enjoy this installment without having read the first. Things are explained in such a way as not to bore you with repetitive recaps, but rather you feel like you’re drawn into the story at a different point. Sweeping scenes surround you with the sights and sounds of the times, and you can definitely tell when you’re not in Kansas anymore. Keira and Edmund are smoldering hot foxes and their witty banter makes for a good chuckle. I loved Alice and was reminded more than once of the darling of Wonderland, though her tale is far away from this era. For any die hard steampunk fans you might consider this on the lighter side of the genre, heavy on the romance and swordsmanship without as much of the cogs and wheels you might have come to expect. Overall a great read in the vein of classic time travel fantasy romance that I’d recommend to my followers who are of age, that means at least 17 plus depending on your whereabouts:) 4 stars
Rex appeared in the doorway, stoic as ever, with a tray of food. He placed the tray on a nearby table. “The Windsors are here to see you.”
Keira jumped to her feet. Her heart accelerated in her chest. Alice and Edmund! Heaven help her. She needed to shore up her willpower when it came to Edmund. Setting her shoulders, she followed Rex down the hall to the vestibule located just off the main entrance.
Alice stood in a simple blue muslin dress and fussed with her reticule. She always did her best to dress for comfort. Edmund wore a brown vest over a white shirt and pressed trousers. His frock coat hung over his arm.
“Keira!” Alice rushed forward and wrapped her into a warm embrace. Keira returned Alice’s strong hug with one of her own, realizing she’d missed Alice more than she thought she would.
Edmund cleared his throat.
Keira glanced up. “Hello, Ed.”
His eyes smoldered with desire. “Keira.”
Oh, his red, pouty lips were like chocolate — tempting her to take another bite. She looked at Rex. “Can you bring appetizers and coffee to my study?”
He arched an eyebrow. “Coffee, My Lady?”
A little snort escaped his lips, but he departed.
