Something Wicked This Way Comes…
As a thief, I stick to the shadows as much as possible. But when the head of the Sinclair Family picks me to compete in the Tournament of Blades, there’s no escaping the spotlight—or the danger.
Even though he’s my competition, Devon Sinclair thinks I have the best shot at winning what’s supposed to be a friendly contest. But when the competitors start having mysterious “accidents,” it looks like someone will do anything to win—no matter who they hurt.
As if I didn’t have enough to worry about, mobster Victor Draconi is plotting against Devon and the rest of my friends, and someone’s going around Cloudburst Falls murdering monsters. One thing’s for sure. Sometimes, humans can be more monstrous than anything else…
Flippin’ wow dude, this book slayed me!  There’s mystery, supernaturals, suspense, tons of actions, sexy heroines and feisty brutes to mix it up a bit.  Oh and of course we can’t forget the magic!  This was my first time to read any Jennifer Estep, and needless to say I’m a bit of a fan now.  Dark Heart of Magic is the second book in the Black Blade series, but I honestly read it then went back to book 1 and found myself not at all lost or confused, there’s just some spoilers for book 1 in this installment, so if you’re not a fan of that, then read them in order for the most enjoyment.  While it is fast paced and read rather quickly, the words are not cheaply used and I enjoyed the delivery and wit of the narrative.  If you like strong, sarcastic female protagonists- this is a book you’ll certainly dig.  My only complaint was the few times when it seemed like the pov switched incidentally, which I believe may have been a slip in editing rather than poor writing, because Mz. Estep is stellar!
Here’s some of my favorite quotes to whet your appetite:
Sometimes, humans were more monstrous than anything else.”
“What do you normally do about tree trolls who throw things at tourists?”
Run out of steam? Are you kidding? He’s eating that apple faster than he talks.  All that sugar will just rev up his engine that much more.”
