Link to Goodreads:
Settling into her second year of death, Alex is ready to explore her limitless mind in an afterworld that changes each day, but she still isn’t resting in peace.
The ‘gifted’ are humans who see spirits and have the same extraordinary mental powers, though they aren’t considered equals. Centuries ago, Alex’s family led the movement to keep the living and dead separated, but the gifted believe Alex is a reincarnation of their slain civil leader. When they begin to break down the barriers that protect the city, the afterworld becomes dangerous and vulnerable to exposure. The living and dead both want to use Alex for their own gain, but what they don’t realize is that neither side will want her when they find out who she really is.
In the afterworld, nothing stays buried for long.
OF DELICATE PIECES is the follow-up to A. Lynden Rolland’s OF BREAKABLE THINGS.
FOLLOW UP TO:
A captivating debut about the fragility of life, love, and perspective.
When Chase dies tragically, Alex embraces her own mortality. What she didn’t expect was that she’d have to make a choice: forget the years of pain and suffering once and for all, or linger as a spirit and get another chance at life and love.
Alex doesn’t hesitate to choose; she’d follow Chase anywhere. But the spirit world is nothing like she expected, and Alex finds she’s forced to fight for her life once more. For even in a world where secrets are buried much deeper than six feet under, a legacy can continue to haunt you—and in a place this dangerous, no one is resting in peace.
Special deleted scene:
When Of Breakable Things ends, Alex’s major issues are how and why she is identical to the afterworld’s slain prophet, Sephi Anovark. Those questions (and others) are answered in Of Delicate Pieces, and the spirit world has mixed feelings about a second coming of their deceased celebrity. Half the spirits in the afterworld are curious, asking for autographs and predictions. The other half is scared that everything Sephi fought to change will shake up their seemingly perfect world.
This scene was cut from the beginning of the story. With their accelerated senses, spirits can see much further than their human eyes ever could, and many of them have the power of telekinesis, so Alex isn’t safe even looking out from her balcony over Lazuli Street.
The redwood trees canopied the city, shadowing the streets and the spirits floating through the fog. The air pulsed in and out in a steady 1-2 beat, alive with the energy. Alex couldn’t resist. She opened the doors to step out and feel the current of electricity rising like heat. She closed her eyes and reveled in the charge. It was invigorating.
She opened her eyes just in time to see a gray brick spiraling upward from Lazuli Street. She analyzed the trajectory and jumped backward, leaping inside and closing the doors before the brick reached her. She crouched down, head in her hands.
Crack. She waited for the shatter but it never came. Alex spread her fingers to peer through and see the area crunched by the hit. She watched the lines stretch from the center hit, growing like a web. But it hadn’t caught her.
Should she tell someone? Romey, the director? No. She couldn’t. They might move her room. She loved this space too much to leave it, so she shut the curtains and promised herself not to open them again.
In Of Delicate Pieces, Alex struggles with her feelings about her new stardom. She enjoys the positive attention, the spirits on the street rushing to greet her and ask her questions. But the more she learns about herself, her family, and her hometown, the more she realizes how dangerous the afterworld is for her.
