Bright lights blinded from above and gleamed against the stark white floor. I hurtled down the narrow hall, desperate for escape.
With every pounding step, I felt the separation grow. A chasm rending and ripping until I felt myself splitting in two.
Gasping for breath, I stumbled out of the building and into the vacancy of the deep, deep night. Wind gusted, tumbling along the surface of the ground, a stir of agitation at my feet.
Above, the storm raged. Clouds dark and heavy and ominous.
Lightning struck. A crackle of energy shocked through the air. Wrapping me in coils of white-hot agony.
For a moment, I gave into it and let myself feel. I lifted my face to the tormented sky, hands gripping my hair as I screamed.
Screamed in anguish.
Screamed in regret.
Screamed loud enough I would never forget.
A crack of thunder opened the sky.
Rain poured.
My hands fisted at my sides, and I buried the memory of the way he’d felt in my arms, the memory of his face, in the deepest part of me, sealed it off and cemented my heart.
My spirit grasped and wove with the promise I had made him.
I will never fall in love again.
Not ever again.
Not after tonight.

#Prescient Promo Tour and #giveaway @creativindie

by Derek Murphy
Genre: Time Travel/Dystopia
Release Date: March 21st 2016

The first time I saw the future I lost hope.
It wasn’t just that the future sucked; that civilization had gone and ruined itself; that we’d altered our own DNA and devolved into predatory monsters that fed on the few remaining survivors. That was all awful enough, but it was more than that. I remember being young and thinking, when I grow up, I’ll have a nice big house. I’ll get an exciting, interesting job. I’ll meet the man of my dreams and we’ll fall in love and stay together forever.
But that all disappeared the first time I tripped 20 years into the future and found the houses burned, the handsome boys dead, and the only jobs were the ones young girls gave hairy old survivors in tents in exchange for a little food and water. Nobody asked little girls what they wanted to be when they grew up anymore. Nobody wanted to draw attention to the fact that most of them wouldn’t live that long.
There was no hope, no peace for anyone. At least I had it better than they did. When my trip was over, I would get to go back. Back to the normalcy of 2015. Back to iPhones and Twitter and buying so much food it went bad before you could eat it. Back to laughing over foamy cappuccinos and iced lattes at the mall, window shopping and flirting with hot guys (not that I ever did that, mind you – but I always wanted to). And I still could. That was the point. Unlike everybody else, for whom 2015 was 20 years ago – long before humanity was destroyed – it was my reality. At least, it was some of the time.

But after seeing the future; after struggling to make it to the end of the day; after my first kill – none of those other things were the least bit enjoyable. All I could think when I got back to the real world, is how can I stop what’s coming?

is a young adult time-travel dystopia, this is Part One of the first book in
the series.

Wow, I am once again not sure how to categorize this.  Sure it was a fast paced, quick read, but it was definitely NOT for lack of compelling content, mere due to length and a gripping plot with fascinating characters.  I’m new to the series yet felt that I learned quite a lot in the short amount of time I spent in this world.  Captivated by the nuanced details that drew me in to a magical world full of forbidden love, The Timekeeper’s Daughter will stay with you long after you reach 100%read.

All magic comes with a price.

The new school year brings with it a welcome return to normalcy after Alice’s narrow escape from a cursed hotel while on summer vacation. But when a young girl drowns in a freak accident that seems eerily similar to her own near-death experience, Alice suspects there might be something going on that not even the police can uncover.

The girl’s older sister, Eva attends Alice’s school, and Alice immediately befriends her. But things change when when Alice learns that Eva is determined to use magic to bring her sister back. She must decide whether to help Eva work the highly dangerous magic or stop her at all costs. After all, no one knows better than Alice the true price of magic.

Find the diary, break the curse, step through The Looking Glass!
Fifteen-year-old Alice Montgomery wakes up in the lobby of the B&B where she has been vacationing with her family to a startling discovery: no one can see or hear her. The cheap desk lights have been replaced with gas lamps and the linoleum floor with hardwood and rich Oriental carpeting. Someone has replaced the artwork with eerie paintings of Elizabeth Blackwell, the insane actress and rumored witch who killed herself at the hotel in the 1880s. Alice watches from behind the looking glass where she is haunted by Elizabeth Blackwell. Trapped in the 19th-century version of the hotel, Alice must figure out a way to break Elizabeth’s curse—with the help of Elizabeth’s old diary and Tony, the son of a ghost hunter who is investigating the haunted B&B—before she becomes the inn’s next victim.

Mama’s Thoughts:
So far this series has me completely enthralled!  Fans of Heather Lyons and A.G. Howard- there’s a new re-telling on the block!  Though inspired by the classic tale, this particular journey veers in a much different direction.  I greatly appreciated Ms. Arnold’s attention to detail, and way of circling back around to something which at first seemed inconsequential.  I just love when all the little things add up to something big!  A ghostly story full of magic and with, The Lingering Grace continues what began in The Looking Glass… and asks more questions while answering others.

Mama’s Thoughts:

Holy wowzers, this was even more exciting than the first book! With so many surprises in store, you’re going to need to sit down for this one!  Quickly paced with a near-nail-biting intensity, Out of the Ashes picks up immediately following the conclusion of Into the Fire, so if you’ve yet to read the first book, I’d grab it right now to catch up.  Peppered with romantic confusion, tension and a whole lot of self discovery, this is the story of Cara fighting for what she wants most, and trying to figure out exactly what that is in the first place comes at a heck of a price.  Don’t miss this must read series!

The Witchling Apprentice
by B. Kristin McMichael
Genre: YA Paranormal
Release Date: March 15th 2016
Lexia Press, LLC

Summary from Goodreads:

Witches, potions, and magical spells—that all made sense, but men turning into animal-like monsters in the middle of the night? That had to be fiction, right? Wrong. Cassandra Booth thought her world of witches would be complete when she joined her coven. Fate didn’t plan to let that be the case for her. Joining the coven brings new knowledge, like mates and men as animals, all things Cassie would rather not know. As her plans unravel she must find a way to join the coven without committing her life to a guy she once was friends with and now hates.

Tick … Tick … Tick …
Cassandra Booth tried to
ignore the clock as it clicked away from above the desk beside her. It was
nerve-wracking enough knowing that if you wanted to take the test to be an apprentice
witch you had to do it in front of at least fifty people. However, the clock
reminding her it was just about to start was driving her nuts.
Tick … Tick … Tick …
Cassie tried to go over
each step of the potion she was making in her head. She needed to concentrate
and ignore the noises around her as the room began to fill up with high
Tick … Tick …
The sound was lost in
the now-growing sound of students talking. Unfortunately, that wasn’t any
better. She glanced up at the room in front of her. Mistake. It was almost
half-full of people. No one was looking directly at her, but that didn’t make
it any easier. Cassie was anxious enough sitting in the lecture area alone, on
display, but now there were students who would be watching and talking about

Cassie kept her eyes
locked on the table and all her supplies. Taking inventory was easy. Doing the
actual potion and saying the spell correctly was supposed to be the hard part.
No one in her high school, let alone grade, was even attempting to make the
protection spell that had been assigned to her and which would move her from
witchling up to the level of junior apprentice. Most people were shocked when
she’d asked. It had been many years since a high school student had
apprenticed, but that wasn’t going to stop Cassie. She was ready to get out of
her boring classes. She was ready to join everyone in obtaining the great
knowledge that came with being a full-time member of the coven. Cassie was
ready to belong.

Mama’s Thoughts:
I don’t keep it a secret that I’m a huge fan of BKM and her Blue Eyes books, not to mention Dev’s story, so when I found out the universe would be expanded with Witchling Apprentice I was stoked! This book definitely did not disappoint.  I love Cassie now and was really happy to learn more about her and the coven.  This was an exciting book full of fun and fantasy adventure, not to mention a healthy dose of humor.  Once again this could be considered clean ya so read as you wish.  Grab your copy today, and if you haven’t read previous books in the universe, start with Legend of the Blue Eyes today!

Title: Frantic
Author: Casey L Bond
Genre: YA Paranormal

Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR
Porschia Grant is in Frenzy. The hunger is constant. It’s all-consuming, as is the pain and sickness. Something went wrong when she turned. Perhaps it was the fact that an infected bit her moments before, or maybe it’s something else entirely.
One thing is certain, if Porschia can’t learn to feed, she will die. If she can’t learn to control her extreme emotional swings, she will kill someone.  And that would destroy her.
How long can the night-walkers keep her turning a secret from the Colony? Will Saul stand beside her now that she’s changed? And what will happen when she re-enters the forest?

A Bit in the Life Of: Casey Bond

If you look on my social media bio, you’ll see that I’m a wife, mother, author and fan of Marshall University. Most people follow me on social media for one of those reasons, and it isn’t the fact that I bleed green.  It’s about the books I write.

Admittedly a nerdy weirdo, I write young adult and new adult fiction, everything from a vampires to sassy Vegas vixens and all things in between. I haven’t always written. Sure, in high school and college, I was forced to, but as an adult, no one gave me an assignment to fulfill. I blame my passion for writing on a former love of words, Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer and my mom (partially because Moms get blamed for everything).

I was the annoying kid in class, who grinned when a term paper was assigned, who’d rather write twenty-five pages of double-spaced sentences complete with citations instead of taking a multiple-choice test. After my days at Marshall and all assignments ended, also known as graduation, I put my big girl panties on and entered the workforce. I loved what I did! I worked in insurance claims and actually loved my job and my new husband and life was great.

In time, hubs and I decided it might be time to expand the fam. When I got pregnant with my first child, we made the mutual decision that I would stay home with her and quit my job. It’s what I wanted and we were blessed to be able to afford it. So, I wrote my resignation and my primary role became mother. I went from being very busy at the office to very busy at home. I know what you’re thinking….stay-at-home Moms have all the time in the world. Let me tell you what. Nope. There’s a constant something that needs attention: the baby, the pets, the laundry, dinner, the errands, the phone calls from folks who say, hey you don’t work so can you…. It never ends.

When I became pregnant with my second child, I could not sleep. Insomnia city. Near Halloween, a marathon of Twilight, based on the books by Stephenie Meyer came on. I devoured the movies and then watched Breaking Dawn Part 1 with a friend at the theater. But Part 2 wouldn’t release in so long. I grabbed the book. I had to know what happened next. So I read until I had my answer. Talking to my mom, I told her about the story and how fun it was to read and she looked at me and asked a very simple question. She said, “Casey, you could write a book. Why don’t you?”

Why didn’t I? I couldn’t. I wasn’t a writer. I wasn’t good enough to be an author. I shrugged and told her the same thing. She wouldn’t listen and told me to do it anyway. So, when I couldn’t sleep, I wrote. I wrote sentences, paragraphs, chapters and in just a few months, had written a novel.

Winter Shadows was published. It never hit the New York Times bestseller list or made headlines. But it did propel me forward, because I’d found my passion. I found a love of crafting stories. Now that I’ve found what I love to do, I do it. Every day, I try to write something. Between running my kids to school and other activities, errands, keeping everyone clothed and fed, tending to my animals and making decisions on a new house we’re building, it can get tough to carve out time. But I do it. Because I love it and I won’t let anything stop me from doing something I love so much.

My children, hubby and family will always come first. There’s no question. But it’s okay to have a passion. It’s okay to love something else. And it’s okay for that love to have blossomed from hobby to career.

Here’s a breakdown of a typical day for me, in case you wonder why I’m not cranking books out faster (LOL!):

6:00am: Alarm blares annoyingly, making me get out of bed to shut it off. Shower.

6:15am: Get oldest daughter out of bed and make breakfast.

6:30am: Finish drying hair and get youngest out of bed.

6:50am: Everyone must be dressed, teeth brushed, hair combed, backpack ready and coats on and ready to run for the car. (Because we always run late somehow)

7:00am: Bus stop.

7:15-8:15am: We have an hour to burn before having to leave for Pre-K. So, it’s put laundry on, do any dishes that haven’t been done yet, vacuum if there’s time. Pack up my computer and brush hair again. Feed dog and chickens.

8:30-9:00 am: Drive

9-12:00pm: Drop my youngest at Pre-K. Run to gas station. Run to post office. Mail parcels and check PO Box. Go to Library to type for as long as I can. Rush to the grocery store to grab essentials and then to Pre-K to pick youngest up again.

12-12:30pm: Drive home.

1-3:45pm: Unload groceries. Make lunch. Eat lunch. Feed chickens again. Get their eggs. Play with my youngest daughter—a lot. Check social media on my phone. Answer any questions that the contactor has regarding the house. Take the trash out. Clean the floor because my dog tracked in mud. Go outside with my youngest. Come back inside because she’s cold. Clean the floor again because we tracked in mud.

4:00-5:30pm: Oldest arrives from bus. Fix her a snack because she’s always famished. Homework. Play outside. Feed chickens. Check their water.

6:00pm: Make dinner. Kids and I will eat dinner. Then they can watch a TV episode or two to chillax.

7:00pm: Baths and getting ready for bed. Hubs comes home and eats dinner.

8:00pm: Bedtime

9:00pm: Usually still trying to get them to shush and go to sleep.

9:30pm: Quiet. I read or write depending on my mood.

10:00pm: My bedtime. #fallsonbed

It really is fun and amazing. I’m happier now than I’ve been in a long time and more importantly, I’m content. I feel like it took until my 30s to find my stride, my worth, but it was so worth it. Thank you for hanging with me. I hope you enjoy the pictures and take something away from my story. ❤

Guest Interview:

Welcome to Mama Reads Hazel Sleeps, D.K. Janotta!

Thank you.

Your novel ‘Fifty Percent Vampire’ isn’t just about vampires, and it isn’t just a love story either.

Far from it! It’s a Bildungsroman in which I make use of the vampire genre to explore several important themes. Family, otherness, the meaning of life, friendship, coming of age, mental health, to mention a few.

Mental health?

Sure. Did you notice the several voices inside Astrid’s head? One of the big questions in the novel is, is Astrid quite with it? Is she telling us the truth? Are the other characters telling us the truth? In this way I’m exploring the art of fiction itself.

So the story can be read on several levels?

Yes. You can read the novel as a pure paranormal romance but I’m hoping readers will find this a valuable book to go back to time and again and find new meaning with each reading. There are a lot of clues to be found in the story and many references to follow up. It’s like a literary jigsaw puzzle.

And it’s funny.

All the best stories contain the spice of comedy. Let’s start with Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’, stop off for a while at Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ and end up with Andy Weir’s ‘The Martian’.  The basic story of ‘The Martian’ is a stranded guy trying to get home to Earth from several million miles away and having to survive on a diet of potatoes at every meal. Most people would die of despair, but not Mark Watney. His sense of humor sees him through.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, how do you get past it?

Luckily, I hardly ever get writer’s block, but if I do I have several solutions.

  1. Go to bed (it worked for Marcel Proust!).
  2. Watch a good movie. My current favorite is ‘The Martian’ written by Andy Weir and directed by Ridley Scott, but I have to admit that I’ve got an embarrassingly huge dvd library, so there always something I haven’t seen for ages.
  3. Dip into a good book such as ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘Wuthering Heights’, ‘The Hunger Games’ etc etc etc. I’ve just finished reading ‘The Coldest Girl in Coldtown’ by Holly Black for the second or third time. Everyone should read this; it’s awesome.
  4. Listen to music.
  5. Take a leaf from one of Charles Dickens’ books and go for a walk to clear my head.
  6. Write something else. I’ve always got several projects on the go.
