A Bet Worth Making by Heather Hildenbrand

(Book 2 in the Grayson County Series)

Jordan DeWalter has her future mapped out—build the most impressive architectural design portfolio in all of New England, and use it to one day open her own firm. But when her father unexpectedly passes away, her plans, and her heart, are broken. Now, if she wants the money once promised to her, she’ll have to return to the town that threw her family out over twenty years ago in order to get it.

If there’s one thing Jordan despises more than small towns, it’s small town people.

Casey Luck has spent his life skating by on charm and a devil-may-care attitude. Never one to take life too seriously, he’s kept secret his dream of building custom dirt bikes. Instead, he fills the role his family expects: tractor mechanic, farm handyman, comedic relief. But, deep down, Casey’s restless for something more.

Then he meets his new roommate: Jordan.

Their attraction is instant, but Jordan’s not fooled by the chemistry between them. When the summer is over, she’s out of here no matter what. In fact, she’s willing to bet on it.

Will their undeniable connection be the push they both need to break free of their pasts, or will Jordan’s wager on their failure ruin the future for them both?

Mama says you should read this book! Continuing in the tradition of the first Grayson County book, we have a story that’s all too familiar to me, as I grew up in a rural farm town where a lot of people wanted to escape to “the big city” while others couldn’t imagine a life outside of their little hometown.  I love the way Heather takes these roles and flip flops them around, making the girls have their escape, briefly, then they come back home, even if it is begrudgingly.  I love the witty and sarcastic humor and sweet building to steamy romances.  She’s got a great start to this series and we can only hope there will be even more!

Liria is nineteen, homeless, and addicted to heroin…

She’s also determined to not end up dead—like her mother. But every time she tries to get clean, on her feet, and back on the employment train, everything falls apart. This time is different. This time, she knows there are only two choices—addiction or death. Once she gets clean, though, her life ends up even rockier than before.

Desperate for help, Liria goes to the one person she can count on for a safe place to stay and regular meals—her father, Cyryl Czetski. However, she soon learns Cyryl isn’t her real father, and he wants a very different kind of relationship. Liria ultimately rejects his advances and ends up on the streets yet again, this time working in an illegal strip club.

Finally taking control of her life, Liria lands a job in a Vegas nightclub, where she meets Arty—the woman of her dreams.

Arty is beautiful, funny, and rich. But when other nightclub employees turn up dead—including Liria’s best friend, Lee—Liria suspects the business might be a front for something far more sinister.

When Arty reveals Liria’s life is also in danger, she promises to keep her safe. But Arty’s acting strangely, and seems to know too much about the mysterious deaths. Is she really trying to save her, or is she holding her hostage, using her as a pawn in a game Liria doesn’t understand?

Liria thought she was used to always second guessing everyone’s intentions. That’s how life is. But if the drugs don’t ruin her, The Hustle will…

Mama Says:
This had a very gritty, Noir feel to it.  I almost expected a smoking lounge to be somewhere in there, but alas it was not to be.  I found Roderick’s portrayal of a life on the streets to be far more realistic than what you typically get in NA fiction, and she didn’t pull any punches.  This book will not be for everyone as it gets real dark basically straight out of the gate, however, if you take the chance I think you’ll find it’s worth the time and discomfort.  Some books you read make you feel warm and loved, this is not that book.  However, The Hustle does keep you on your toes and confused as to who is trustworthy and who’s playing games, so if you’re a mystery lover or thrill seeker, this would be right up your alley.  I constantly bit my nails I was so nervous for Liria in some cases, you definitely want to give that girl a hug, or a sandwich.  Or both.

ELIZABETH RODERICK grew up as a barefoot ruffian on a fruit orchard near Yakima, in the eastern part of Washington State. After weathering the grunge revolution and devolution in Olympia, Washington, Portland, Oregon and Seattle, she recently moved to a small cluster of houses amidst the vineyards of California’s Central Coast.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and worked for many years as a paralegal and translator. She is a musician and songwriter, and has played in many bands, rocking some instruments she doesn’t even know the real names for, but mostly guitar, bass and keyboards.

Elizabeth writes novels for young adults and adults; short stories; and memoir which is way more interesting than it should be. Her stories are about love, death, gang warfare, and madness; her characters tend to be of the type that society generally shuns: addicts, convicts, and the mentally ill. She believes if people get to know these characters in stories and in real life, they’ll find them more likeable than they originally thought.

She applies Hunter S. Thompson’s Gonzo method to fiction writing. It often gets a little heavier than what she had in mind, but she chalks it up to forced consciousness expansion.

About the Book:

People say I’m shameless. They’re right.

I like my work dirty and my sex even dirtier. It takes a hell of a lot to tilt my moral compass, and dancing as a private stripper for horny suburbanites doesn’t even register. Neither does hooking up with them afterward whenever the mood strikes—it’s one of the bennies of the job—but it’s always a one-and-done. I don’t do repeat performances. Ever.

Until I meet the one girl in all of Chicago not interested in dry humping my junk. She’s all I can think about, and that’s a problem, because I made sure she wants nothing to do with me. But I’ve seen her deepest secrets, her darkest fantasies, and they match mine to a fucking T.

I want her. Bad.

Now I need to show her how good it can feel…to be shameless.

About the Book:

I’m indecisive when it comes to my shoes. Choosing a werewolf mate who’ll be with me until I croak? Pardon me while I take some time to think on it. But a steamy encounter before the final ceremony changes everything.

Reaper, the Omega’s eldest grandson, is fiercely loyal, scorching hot, and built for pleasure. He brings down my defenses, and before I know what’s happening, I succumb to the heat in his touch and the skill of his mouth. I’ve only just met him, but I need him like no other.

As part of my pack duties, I must parade in front of the Alpha, who has first choice of the pre-shifters. Rumors of his dark desires run deep, and I’ve always been intrigued. But the forbidden passion blazing between Reaper and me is too primal to deny. By pack law, Reaper can’t have me until the Alpha makes his choice…but Reaper’s never been one to follow the rules.

About the Book:

When he wins a sexy bet, billionaire Linc Blair can’t wait to get Lauren Neill naked. He’s never gone for her type in the past, and he’s pretty certain it has more to do with her buttoned-up hotness than the nagging sense that something is missing from his life. But when he gets a glimpse of the vulnerable woman beneath the conservative, yet oh-so-sexy clothes, it’s a game changer.

Lauren can’t believe she’s spending a few days with one of sexiest, and most annoying men she’s ever met. But she can’t deny the chemistry between them, and for once in her life she’s letting down her guard so she can explore a different side of herself. The side only Linc brings out in her.

Taking it slow, he unleashes her sexuality and it quickly occurs to him that what started out as a bet for him has become something more. With their weekend nearly over, and her ex showing interest in this new confident version of Lauren, Linc will have to risk it all if he wants to win the game of love.

About the Book:
Rion Ward fought hard to be free of the Irish mob life. Now, as the co-owner of Boston’s hottest aphrodisiac club, he’s traded crime for the ultimate sexual fantasy. But when the “good girl” from his past walks through Lick’s doors, he discovers that his unconsummated hunger for her never abated.
Widowed for two years from a man who felt that anything besides the missionary position was dirty, Harper Shaw is ready to move on. The first step to feeling alive again is sex. Hot, dirty, black-out-from-orgasm sex. And who better to provide it than the brooding, sexy, tatted bad boy-turned-man she’s known for years?
Rion, however, has one stipulation: He’ll be hers only for one night. One night to explore her every fantasy. One night to push her limits.  One night to introduce her to a passion that makes both doubt if it will be enough…

K.S. Thomas #OneMoreChapter #aprilrelease #review

DATE RELEASED: April 9, 2016

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

PAGE COUNT: 229 Amazon page count

Having overdosed on the cold, unyielding aspects of reality at an early age, books became a welcome escape I was happy to dedicate my life to. Editing romance novels seemed like the perfect career choice for the girl who craved fantasy and a world she could exercise a little control over. Bottom line, I like having a happy ending I can count on.
Where I prefer to have my head in the clouds, unattached to the tumultuous roller-coaster of real life, his feet are so firmly planted on the ground, they’re sinking in and getting buried there.
Jensen seems an unlikely hero for any story, let alone mine. He’s moody. And confused. And pretty damn sure there’s no such thing as happy ever after.
But then that’s the thing about all the best happy endings. They show up when you least expect them to.

Mama Says:

This book was surprisingly engrossing. That’s not to say I expected the book to be bad, I just don’t generally get so swept away by a novel so firmly rooted in reality. Contrary to what you might expect, it wasn’t 100% predictable either, a refreshing quality in a romantically inclined story.   Thomas has a cast of interesting characters and a plot that was almost magical, though there is no actual magic involved, it was more a feeling you get, such as that you might have while reading a fairy tale or epic fantasy.  You become completely immersed in the story and forget the world around you, even though it’s a mirror of our own reality.  I didn’t like Jensen much at first but as he developed I liked him more.  Overall this would be a great beach read, it’s not too heavy that it would emotionally destroy you, but it’s not so light as to lack any substance.  Definitely for adults, grab a copy and enjoy your holiday weekend!

#FlyingBlind is another lyrical novel from Caroline Gill #giveaway and #review inside! @writesuntildawn @xpressobktours

Flying Blind
Caroline A. Gill
(The Flykeeper Chronicles, #2)
Publication date: May 21st 2016
Genres: Dystopia, Paranormal, Young Adult

In a broken America, seventeen-year old Iolani Bearse encounters a world full of wonder and danger.

Lani discovers a secret: houseflies have magic.

Stealers have no mercy.

Armed with memory-draining lanterns, the stone-cold hunters relentlessly follow catastrophes, laying traps, preying on the weak.

Together with her father, Eleanor, Sam, and Mango, her beloved pinto mare, Lani rescues victims from the grasp of Memory Stealers. One by one, she saves whomever she can, looking for any path that leads to safety. When her family’s farmhouse is attacked, Lani must act quickly to save those she loves.

Can Lani unmask their powerful, hidden enemies before the flies’ magic fails and everything burns to ashes?

Will the loss of one of her greatest friends become her downfall?

Can Lani overcome the evil that is tearing her world apart, flying blind?

Mama Says:
As with the first book, I greatly enjoyed the lyrical quality of Caroline Gill’s prose.  Much different than any urban fantasy book I’ve ever read, this one is steeped in fantasy and magic, but also very realistic.  I’m intrigued to see where the story goes from here, as there were some rather unexpected twists in this second installment.  Lani is one of those characters who is just as confused as the reader at first, but slowly learns the truth of what’s happening and fights to save those she loves.  She’s strong and thoughtful, and determined.  I also appreciate a good story without a main focus on romance from time to time, so if that’s more your bag definitely check out this series.  Sometimes clean ya reads are so boring, but I certainly wouldn’t accuse Flying Blind of being anything other than exciting and truly captivating!  This reminded me of another book about sentient insects that I greatly enjoyed, in that it seemed very well researched and thought out, making sure to seamlessly blend fact and fiction.

A thoughtful new #mayrelease with exclusive #authorinterview and #review: Breakfast with Neruda by Laura Moe @meritpress

Breakfast with Neruda by Laura Moe (May 2016)

This debut is … flecked with an endearing blend of idealism, empathy, and quirk.”— Booklist

“Moe uses lyrical language to introduce teenagers whose problems go beyond bullying or unrequited love. She treats Michael’s unusual home situation with realistic grace, while the relationship between the two teenagers is organic and interesting. A summer long punishment becomes a sensitive, thoughtful novel.”—Kirkus Reviews

Michael Flynn is just trying to get through his community service after he made the dumb decision to try to blow up his friend’s car with fireworks–the same friend who stole Michael’s girl. Being expelled and losing his best buddy and his girlfriend are the least of his problems: Michael has learned to hide everything, from his sick hoarder mother to the fact that he’s stuck living in a 1982 Ford LTD station wagon he calls the Blue Whale.

Then one day, during mandatory community service, he meets Shelly, a girl with a past, who’s also special enough to unmask Michael’s deepest secrets. Can he manage to be worthy of her love, a guy living in a car, unable to return to his chaotic and fit-to-be-condemned home? Shelly won’t give up, and tries to peel back the layers of garbage and pain to reveal Michael’s immense heart.

Mama Says:

This book is one of those moving pieces of literature you hope is adopted into the curriculum of middle and high schools across the country.  So often kids like Michael and Shelly are labeled as trouble makers and cast aside, written off as though they have no chance of success, and it’s a vicious cycle.  Breakfast With Neruda gives us their side of the story, and how many times there might be a lot more going on in these so-called deviants lives than we imagine.  With clarity and pathos, Laura Moe paints a hopeful picture with brief instances of a light trying to break through, amidst great struggle on the journey these kids face to find who they really are, or want to be.  I highly recommend this and will definitely be adding it to my daughter’s home library for when she’s older.  (She’s 3 so I doubt she’d really let me read it to her just yet, we’ll try tackling Pooh bear first.)

Author Q&A:

Laura Moe HeadshotA high school teacher and librarian, Laura Moe is a published poet (in journals included Mischief, Caprice, and Other Poetic Devices), but her great love is fiction. This is her first novel.

  1. Often we ask what someone’s favorite book is, but I’d like to know what book really stuck with you as a kid (or teen?) I was a voracious reader as a kid, but two books that stand out from my early ten reading years are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Catcher in the Rye. Both books have compelling narrators and great story lines.

  1. What are your thoughts on the current trends in gender roles in YA fiction? Gender roles are changing in real life, and I like that YA lit reflects that with strong female characters like Katniss Everdeen and Hazel Grace Lancaster: young women who discover their own strengths and don’t shrink back when faced with life altering challenges. I think an unexplored topic is transgender. I’d love to see someone deal with that topic sensitively for teens.

  1. Do you think that realistic fiction can still be an escape from reality or that it’s purely meant to help us understand the real world? It can do both. Fiction writers create new worlds within the realm of pages, and stories can delight and transcend, yet within that fictional world lies an ocean of truth that enables teens to understand themselves and their peers. The teen years are such a vulnerable time, and young readers benefit by seeing aspects of themselves in novels. Stories also help readers understand the differences between us. It may be called fiction, but there are layers of truth within.

  1. Where is the weirdest place you have ever worked on your writing? When I was working on an earlier draft of Breakfast With Neruda we had a major power outages in much of Ohio after a vicious summer storm, and for nearly two weeks much of our city was without electricity. In the aftermath of the storm we also suffered a heat wave. My friend Elizabeth and I started loitering around the food court at the local mall to cool off and borrow their electricity so we could charge our laptops and write.

  1. What message do you most hope readers to take away from Breakfast with Neruda? I saw a great quote in a nonfiction book called Just Mercyby Bryan Stevenson. In it, the author says, “we are all broken by something.” In Michael’s case his brokenness is more obvious given his poverty, but with Shelly her damage less apparent until she opens up and trusts Michael.

  1. Ok, I have to ask- do you have a favorite Neruda passage to share? There are so many wonderful Neruda passages. I love his description of watermelon as “the green whale of summer,” and “the month of June trembled like a butterfly.” My favorite Neruda poem is from 100 Love Sonnets, “Sonnet 89,” which begins with When I die, I want your hands on my eyes; I want the light and wheat of your beloved hands to pass their freshness over me once more….Like Shelly, this poem often makes me cry.

  1. If you were creating your dream cast, who would play Michael Flynn and why? I recently watched a movie called Ashby, where the teen character played by Nat Wolff befriends a former CIA assassin. As I watched I realized Nat embodied my vision of Michael. In some ways the character was mature beyond his years, yet still prone to making bad decisions.
