More demons, epic battles, and fights to the death: introducing the unmissable next installment in the Summoner Trilogy…
On trial for a crime he did not commit, Fletcher must face the Inquisition who will decide his future – the process is gruelling, lead by those who will do anything to see him suffer and haunted by ghosts from the past with clues to Fletcher’s tragic origins.
But Fletcher has little time to dwell on these new revelations when the king announces a deadly challenge to the graduating students at Vocans. One that involves entering Orc territory to complete a risky mission. With loyal demons by their sides, commoners and nobles, dwarves and elves must overcome barriers of class and race and work together to triumph. The reward: a fortune in gold, the safety of an empire and PEACE.
With the entire empire watching, Fletcher has much to prove, but there are those out to get him and it soon becomes clear that there’s a traitor in their midst, trying to thwart the mission and create unrest within the Empire.
With everything stacked against him, Fletcher must use everything in his power to fight his way to victory.
This series gets better with each book! We didn’t have as much introduction to wade through with this being the second installment, so it read much faster than the first. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters better, and being introduced to some fun newcomers (and some not so fun.)
Matharu has brought some wonderful fantasy creatures into the mix, and there are many references to great fantasies past. I always love a good story full of adventure, so naturally I was drawn to the Summoner Trilogy.
Though the books do end on cliffhangers, you don’t have to wait years and years between releases so it’s not so bad. There’s also a few places where the book gets bogged down in tedious detail, but for the most part I enjoy the meandering scenes full of rich detail, rather than being bored by them.
If you enjoy fantasy with strangely compelling characters and sweeping scenery, intense battles and magic then you’ll love this series!
Some of my favorite quotes (non spoilers):
“These two volumes were all that distracted him from the deafening silence of the world outside.”
“”I am beyond suffering,” Fletcher said, dry-eyed. All he felt was anger, raging hot within him.”
“Fletcher blinked in the glare, the heat so fierce his skin almost hurt with the force of it.”
