Title: Phoenix Freed
Author: Elise Faber
Series: The Phoenix Series (book 3)
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Blue Tulip Publishing
Light cannot exist without dark.
The unexpected arrival of a sibling.
An enemy that wants to exploit her gift of foresight.
Daughtry has been to hell and come back with a man who will never leave her side. With Cody in her life, she’s never been happier.
Until Alex arrives at the Colony.
Finally, Daughtry’s dreams of a family seem to be fulfilled — except Alex brings a whole slew of complications. She’s strong, intense, and doesn’t trust easily. Conflict seems to trail her every move.
It seems impossible for Daughtry’s two worlds to merge peacefully until the Dalshie attack and Alex steps up, providing the first measurable hope of eliminating the Rengalla’s most brutal enemy. Alex’s strength is finally an asset, and her heart — her tough, loyal, bruised heart — may have finally found someone who could cherish it.

I really should have been better prepared for this read. The Phoenix series has not been light and fun loving to begin with, but this book didn’t hold anything back. I will say, having read everything in order, you might want to read From Ashes before this if you haven’t, though it isn’t necessary, if you ARE going to read it, there will be spoilers for it, so fair warning on that one. But otherwise, no warnings, except have your nails trimmed to avoid biting them off and stock up on a handful of tissues to have ready, just in case.
Thoughtful and beautiful, this was not the ending I saw coming, but it fit so well, you can tell Faber put a lot of work into making things consistent, while still keeping the surprises coming. The new covers really fit the series so much better- there is certainly romance and sexy stuff, but there’s more to it- magic, action/adventure, and even family drama. The Rengalla are human plus, as Dee so eloquently puts it, so you have all the emotional turmoil PLUS the magic and the fight for their survival. There’s enough going on without adding new additions, which have been happening each book if you’re paying attention.
One of the most interesting things about this last book was the decision to include more perspectives, though this is all told through a third person narrative, it usually shifted between Daughtry and Cody, but now we have more players so we see more sides to the story. It gave us something to bring more tension without feeling like a repeat of what happened in books 2 and 3.
I’m not going to give anything more away, I just want to continue to add to the high marks this book is getting, because they are well deserved. This isn’t some over-hyped PNR, this is the real deal. Grab book 1 and 2 so you can just binge through the series- trust me, you will be glad I recommended this course of action.
