There she meets the captivating but frustrating Dev, and together they discover Molly possesses a power coveted by his people—the ability to conjure almost anything she desires into existence. And accept your past.

When secrets are revealed, danger and death run through the prison. Only the truth can save Emma and Maxim…if it’s not too late.

Dear God. He’d almost made love to her just now. Made love to an employee. Sure, she’d responded quite enthusiastically, but he was still her boss. Any relationship between them was impossible. He hoped she’d understand and not get too needy. He’d have to apologize for the kiss, though he didn’t regret it one bit if he had to be honest with himself. She’d been amazing. God. That body. Those lips. That mouth.

Best kiss of his life and it had to be with an employee. Maxim bit back a groan. She’d expect an apology. That’d also be a good step to resetting the strict boundaries between them. Maxim ushered her out of the house and into the car.

“I’m sorry about what happened back there,” he stated as soon as they began the climb down the hill.

“Sorry?” she asked, meeting his eyes finally.

“I got carried away with the moment.”

“Hmm. Carried away?”

“Yes. You were yelling and I didn’t know how to make you stop.”

“So you kissed me to…” She frowned. “To shut me up?”

“I guess.” He dug a hand through his hair and tugged at his shirt collar. This wasn’t coming out right. “Listen, I hope you understand that can never happen again.”

Emma looked away, silent. Finally she turned back, her face somber. “I know. I hate the yelling, too.” She gave her head a little shake. “But you bring out the worst in me sometimes. I don’t know why.”

“I’m not talking about the yelling.” So he brought out the worst in her, did he? Ditto, my dear. Ditto. “I’m talking about the kiss.”

“Oh, that.” She tossed her long hair back and focused on the road. “I got carried away, too. It didn’t really mean anything.”

“What?” The most intense, hottest kiss of his life and she thought it meant nothing?

Mama Says:

This was such an entirely different book from anything I’ve read, possibly ever.  For one thing, when I read any type of romance novel I don’t expect to learn a new word, so I was more than pleasantly surprised to do so while reading Song of the Blackbird.
For the curious, it was complaisant, which is similar but not the same as complacent though in English they are pronounced the same.  Complaisant essentially describes a people pleaser or someone who cares too much and easily acquieces to another, whereas complacent means not caring at all or not trying to do even a simple thing to please.
This didn’t read as merely well-researched- it read as though the author lived it.  Which makes sense given her history as doctor.  But it was more than that.  The characters and the setting came alive and surrounded me in this eerie sense of foreboding and gathered within me a deep need to find out what would happen to the end.
I highly recommend this book for mature readers, it’s hard to describe without giving much away, but I feel quite sure that you will not have a bad experience.

The advice began flowing later in the afternoon.

I must say, Jack’s behavior disappointed me.’ my grandmother seemed to be waiting for me when i wandered out to the wrap-around porch. She knew him from previous visits. “Are you glad your father arranged the confrontation?”

i settled into the rocking chair next to her.

No. Yes. Sordid details. Mom dropping the charade of normalcy. The Fontaine angle still rocks me. But, my therapist says, a good life lesson. Maybe. Still can’t believe Jack dumped me. We were supposed to be together forever.”

An illusion,” she offered.

My heart was broken once.”

Like anyone would dare,” i cracked, enjoying her company.

Wouldn’t happen now.”

Why? What’s the secret?”

Accepting the world as it is rather than as you want it to be.” The rocking chairs creaked as she paused to enjoy the Carolina spring. “It’s all the same. You are loved. You are unloved. In the end, you have to be true to who you are. Men are peripheral. Pleasant to be sure. Needed for procreation and a balance in perspective. But who you are as a woman is separate from whether or not a man loves you.”

Never knew the true definition of profound before. Never looked at life from this perspective. Men, a luxury? An enhancement to life rather than central to existence?

My point, Gregg,” she explained, “is men come and go. You get to choose which ones matter, who shares your nest and when. Remember. You choose.”

Not swept away by love unless we choose to go there? We get to pick who we bring close? That concept deserves consideration by all women. Vennie’s assertion, that we rule our emotions, not the other way around. The primordial infighting between women for the alpha male, an optional battle. i was not my relationship with Jack. i could let him go without losing me.

They say you feel cold when you die.

The people I’ve killed would beg to differ.

For twenty-something Ransley, the adopted daughter of famed street fighter Estevan Benitez, fighting is all she knows. One hidden detail separates her from the endless string of her pathetic opponents: she can craft and influence heat and fire.

When she’s pitted against the strongest fighters at the infamous Argolla, Ransley faces something she never expected:

A man like her.

Roydon can duplicate himself. When the two collide in the ring, a chain of deals turns Roydon over to Public Four and he’s taken away to undergo the disturbing process of the Nexis. What it is, or what it does, no one outside of The Public knows.

Driven by guilt and a desire to release the only person she’s ever met who’s like her, Ransley isn’t about to leave him for dead—not when he might hold the answers to her missing past. Now she must trust a pair of strangers: a former military man out to collapse the system, and a woman whose premonitions could tear them all apart.

Mama Says:

Holy wowzers I just can not stand to wait any longer, I have to yell at you all about these awesome books.  Seriously.  If I had thought I was going to enjoy them so much I’d practically not eat or sleep for two days, I would have still never been prepared for the hangover that I’m now experiencing.  The Enertia Trials are sci-fi greatness with a dystopian flare, and a unique way of telling the story from many different characters’ viewpoints, though it’s narrated in the third person, so you really feel like you’re getting all sides of the story, yet you’re constantly held in a state of suspense.  I’m not sure if I’ve ever read anything like it, sort of a blend of Minority Report and the last couple of Hunger Games books, but also wholly original.  Each book can be read as a standalone, though it’s better if you read them in order, to avoid some very minor spoilers for the first book.  I appreciated the author’s use of foreshadowing without being too obvious, and her characters were so fascinating.  I felt like we really got a better sense of the world by having two books that are so different yet in the same series.  Once you pick up the first book and fly through the second, I hope you will join me in chanting how sincerely happy you’d be if it’s time for book 3 to be released.  Come on November!!

Author Bio:

J. Kowallis, the only girl of four children, grew up in northern Utah with a head full of wild stories (most often unreal). At the age of 9, she wrote her first poem, a dedication to E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. It was so intriguing, her third grade teacher requested to keep the original. Between living in various fictional worlds, and spending time on her studies, she managed to graduate from Weber State University’s creative writing program. She now lives in Utah with her Mini Schnauzer, Etta, and spends most of her time still bouncing between this world and the fantastical while enjoying delectable über-dark chocolate and lavender baths. She enjoys dreaming about, flying to, and writing about distant lands (real or unreal).

“The most powerful book I’ve read this year! Seductive, compelling, and beautifully written.” ~New York Times bestseller Melissa Foster

The Secret Language of Stones

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iBooks | IndieBound

As World War I rages and the Romanov dynasty reaches its sudden, brutal end, a young jewelry maker discovers love, passion, and her own healing powers in this rich and romantic ghost story, the perfect follow-up to M.J. Rose’s “brilliantly crafted” (Providence Journal) novel The Witch of Painted Sorrows.

Nestled within Paris’s historic Palais Royal is a jewelry store unlike any other. La Fantasie Russie is owned by Pavel Orloff, protégé to the famous Faberge, and is known by the city’s fashion elite as the place to find the rarest of gemstones and the most unique designs. But war has transformed Paris from a city of style and romance to a place of fear and mourning. In the summer of 1918, places where lovers used to walk, widows now wander alone.

So it is from La Fantasie Russie’s workshop that young, ambitious Opaline Duplessi now spends her time making trench watches for soldiers at the front, as well as mourning jewelry for the mothers, wives, and lovers of those who have fallen. People say that Opaline’s creations are magical. But magic is a word Opaline would rather not use. The concept is too closely associated with her mother Sandrine, who practices the dark arts passed down from their ancestor La Lune, one of sixteenth century Paris’s most famous courtesans.

But Opaline does have a rare gift even she can’t deny, a form of lithomancy that allows her to translate the energy emanating from stones. Certain gemstones, combined with a personal item, such as a lock of hair, enable her to receive messages from beyond the grave. In her mind, she is no mystic, but merely a messenger, giving voice to soldiers who died before they were able to properly express themselves to loved ones. Until one day, one of these fallen soldiers communicates a message—directly to her.

So begins a dangerous journey that will take Opaline into the darkest corners of wartime Paris and across the English Channel, where the exiled Romanov dowager empress is waiting to discover the fate of her family. Full of romance, seduction, and a love so powerful it reaches beyond the grave, The Secret Language of Stones is yet another “spellbindingly haunting” (Suspense magazine), “entrancing read that will long be savored” (Library Journal, starred review).

MJ TSLOS - EscapeIntoReading-teaser

A dazzling mix of history, mystery and mystical arts . . . Rose’s paranormal historical bewitches from start to finish. Her amazing ability to make her story line believable and her extraordinary protagonist relatable result in an unforgettable psychic thriller.” (Library Journal (Starred review))

“An exciting mix of adventure, intrigue, and romance in this thrilling historical tale.” (Booklist)

“Haunting, spellbinding, captivating; Rose’s story of the power of love and redemption is masterful. More than a romance or ghost story, this is a tale of a young woman learning to embrace her unique qualities…So carefully crafted and beautifully written, readers will believe in the magical possibilities of love transcending time.” (RT Magazine (Top Pick))

“Rose follows up The Witch of Painted Sorrows (2015) with Sandrine’s daughter’s story, set against the tragic yet exquisite canvases of Paris, the Great War, and the Russian Revolution, and offers fascinating historical tidbits in the midst of bright, imaginative storytelling and complex, supernatural worldbuilding. A compelling, heart-wrenching, creative, and intricate read.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Regret isn’t like grief; it never lessens, just stays the same. A little hard ball in the pit of your stomach.”

What do you have to regret?

“A boy went off to war, and all he wanted was my promise to wait for him.”

You didn’t give it?

“I should have, even if I didn’t love him. Realized he needed me and it wouldn’t hurt me to just tell him. But I didn’t love him. Not the way you wrote about love in your column. A grand love, you wrote. Did you have a love that grand?” I asked him.

No. I never did. Did you?

“No, and I wouldn’t want to. It would be too painful if it failed.”

But to experience it once—even if it is painful—don’t you think it would be worth it? Wouldn’t you want to know what that kind of intensity is like? Wouldn’t you want to feel that deeply?

“I don’t think most people can. Not the way I imagine it.”

Tell me what you imagine.

Leaning over, I shut off the light. If we were going to have a complete conversation, it wouldn’t be as peculiar in the darkness. I’d be less conscious of the empty room.

“I wouldn’t think it happens easily or often. Never for some people. I imagine a love like that is like a fire . . . starting with a spark and growing into a blaze . . . becoming an engulfing passion too hot for most people to withstand.”

But don’t you think a passion that strong would last? Even as glowing embers. Always illuminating the blackness. Always giving some warmth in the cold.

“It seems so tragic to me, but you make it sound wonderful.”

And it would be . . . to always possess the memory of what was possible. Of what could be. Tell me, what do you think it takes to make that first spark?

“What does it take to make a grain of sand become a pearl? They say the sand is an irritant. Maybe love starts that way too. You’re alone in yourself and then meet someone who upsets your balance, who you can’t quite explain away or put in a comfortable place. Someone who shakes your very soul. Who has ideas that jar you and make you think. Who does more than understand you, who understands what you need.”

Who shakes your soul. That’s lovely.

The warmth around my shoulders slipped down my back. Encircled my waist. I’d been kissed before, often enough by Timur, by Grigori, but Jean Luc’s kiss wasn’t like theirs. It began dancing on my lips, pressing on my mouth, and at the same time on my breasts and then at the same time between my legs. Creating sensations all over my body in the same instant. I became the spark about to combust. I smelled his scent of pungent limes, verbena, and myrrh. So intoxicating, at once forbidden and teasing. Like the ghost who now lay on top of me, beckoning me to slide into his dark embrace and get lost within sensation.

Then there’s Ren Owens, the sexy, tattooed Elite member of the Order who has been sharing Ivy’s bed and claiming her heart. Their chemistry is smoking hot, but Ivy knows that Ren has always valued his duty to the Order above all else—he could never touch her if he knew the truth. That is, if he let her live at all. Yet how can she live with herself if she lies to him?

But as the Fae Prince begins to close in on Ivy, intent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld, Ivy is running out of options. If she doesn’t figure out who she can trust—and fast—it’s not only her heart that will be torn apart, but civilization itself.

TORN - RDL Teaser 1

I lifted my right hand, reaching for my iron stake out of instinct, even though I knew it would do no good against the prince.

“You shouldn’t do that.” His voice was deep with what reminded me of an English accent. “I know you want to, but it would be very, very unwise of you, Ivy.”

My hand twitched.

Creepy Prince smiled slightly. “Your friend has been very helpful.”

That got my hackles up. I slid my sunglasses onto my forehead and forced my tone to stay calm and level. “I’m sure she has. Speaking of Val, happen to know where I can find her?”

His lips curled in a semblance of a smile as he stepped closer. The prince was tall, taller than Ren, who was pushing six foot two. My entire back stiffened as I forced myself to hold my ground, even though every instinct demanded that I run and run super fast, because he had almost killed me once before. Correction. He would have definitely killed me if he hadn’t realized what I was and had, I guessed, healed me.

“I’ve been waiting for you,” he said, instead of answering my question, his pale blue eyes fixed on mine.

My hand curled into a useless fist. “That is extremely creepy to hear.”

That cold smile returned. “Why don’t we talk? There are seats across the way.”

“Yeah, that’s not going to happen.”

The slow smile increased but never reached his eyes. “Oh, I know it is.”

Fine hairs rose on my arms.

“What exactly can you do right now?” he said in the same coldly polite voice. “Refuse me?” Creepy Prince laughed, and it wasn’t a bad sound. Again, it was something that was just cold, as if he were mimicking what a human would do. “You can’t.”

“I can.” My palm itched to grab the thorn stake secured under my pant leg, but I held still. I might be reckless, but I wasn’t stupid.

“Really? I will have to beg to differ on that. You see, humans surround us. So many of them, and I have an extraordinary appetite.” His eyes appeared to glimmer as his gaze slithered from the top of my curly head down to my toes. “A rather impressive appetite for many, many things.”

“Okay. First off, ew.” My lip curled. “Secondly, I don’t want to hear about any of your appetites.”

One dark eyebrow rose. “Oh, but you should know that I could kill twenty of these humans in less than five seconds and feed on the rest, leaving them to believe that it was this little red-headed girl who murdered these innocent people.” His voice dropped even lower as he leaned in and icy air brushed my cheek. “You deny me this, those lives will be on your hands, little bird.”

Anger flushed hotly as my eyes met his. There wasn’t a single part of me that doubted anything he said. He had me. God, I hated to admit it, but he had me.
