Title: Maybe Forever

Author: Keyanna Butler

Genre: New Adult

Release Date: July 19

When Harper got pregnant at fourteen, her family abandoned her to be a single mother with no support system. She survived the only way she knew how—hard work and determination. Now she is a nurse in her early thirties, and her son Jamie is ready to embark on high school. Harper can finally say they’ve made it. She can’t take all the credit, though.

Dakota Daughtry isn’t family, but when he signed on to be a Big Brother to Jamie, he finally felt at home…

Joining the Big Brother community program was only meant to boost Dakota’s resume while working on his GED. Once he met Jamie and his mother Harper, he finally found a place where he belonged. Years later, Jamie is graduating the program, and his obligation to hang around is over, but he can’t make himself leave. Jamie is more like a son than a little brother now, and Harper…well, he’s been trying to deny his feelings for her all along.

Jamie is thrilled about the blossoming relationship between his mother and Dakota. His birth father Aiden, not so much…

Aiden doesn’t want Harper—he’s too focused on his career for that—but he doesn’t want Dakota to have her either, and he’s willing to play dirty to ruin Harper and Dakota’s chances at becoming a real family. But things get complicated when Aiden starts to develop actual feelings for Harper’s best friend, and a secret is revealed about Dakota’s past that could change everything…

Harper must choose…family or love? Or can she finally have both?

“So do we need to have the talk?”Jamie is standing in the doorway of Harper’s bedroom as she stands in front of the mirror, putting her final touches on her makeup.

“Jamie,” she says, half amused.

“I’m just saying it has been a long time since you’ve been out on an actual date.”

“Thanks for reminding me.”“Guys aren’t the same as they were fourteen years ago,” he continues, ignoring her.

“I think I’ll be okay, Jam.” Satisfied with her face, she walks over to her closet and pulls out two cardigans on hangers.

“Black or beige?”she asks.

“Black. Make sure he opens the car door for you and any other doors, for that matter.”

“It’s Dakota, Jamie,” Harper says. “Are you forgetting that?” She slips on the cardigan he chose and walks over to him.

“No,” he says.

“I know it’s Dakota.”

“So why are you so nervous? Have you changed your mind about how you feel about us?” she asks, her eyes narrowing slightly in concern.

“No, of course not. I love Dakota,” Jamie says.

“So what’s up?” Harper asks. Jamie shrugs.

“You’re my mom,” he says. “I’m supposed to do this whole overprotective teenage son role.”

“I thought it was my job to worry.” Jamie shakes his head. “Equal share.”

reviewbuttonhypeThis book definitely isn’t your usual saccharine sweet debut romance novel.  This has depth and characters that are realistically portrayed, sometimes devastatingly so.  Though it was more bare bones and predominantly dialogue, there is a larger message of accepting hardships and letting them make you stronger rather than succumbing to the pressure to do what’s easy.  I really appreciated the array of relationships portrayed, rather than having the book focus on only 2 people and their side of the story.  I didn’t realize going into it that it wasn’t a standalone, but I still felt like the main arc of this particular installment was completed, there’s just a hook or twist added at the last minute to setup the next book.  Keyana Butler has put her heart in her book rather than on her sleeve, and I’m really looking forward to seeing her grow as an author!
