I really liked that the male lead was an alpha but not an asshole, and that the female lead wasn’t some simpering twit, but rather a strong, independent, very well educated lady. Research is a fun part of the writing process. Over the years, I’ve learned quite a lot about a variety of subjects, professions, and places. Many writers do meticulous research before they begin to write their books, especially those who write historical fiction and historical romance. They can’t afford to get details wrong. Writers of paranormal and science fiction/fantasy romance have a little more leeway with reality.
For me, the characters come first, not the research. I am a pantser, which means I don’t outline my plot before I begin. I know who my characters are and have an idea where I want them to end up. Sometimes I have a few scenes in my head, but not always. As soon as I have the opening scene clear in my head, I start to write. The characters always surprise me along the way.
I knew Drakon’s Promise would be one of at least four, probably more, books in the Blood of the Drakon series, so I had to figure out the rules of my world. By the time I finished the rough draft, I had a better idea of drakons and their place in our world. Then came the challenge of fleshing out the book and filling in the details. That’s where the research came in.
When I write about different places, many of which I’ve never visited, I rely on tourism guides and online sites. It’s amazing how much information you can find if you take the time to look, including detailed street maps and places of interest. You can get a real “feel” for a town or city. It’s fun to spend time delving into all the pictures and videos and taking virtual tours.
For this book, I also spent time researching private planes, which was a real eye-opener. There are some really luxurious planes out there.
My books tend to be very character driven and their occupations often play into that. In Drakon’s Promise, the fact that the heroine is a librarian is part of what leads her into the hero’s life. But what really catapults her into the dark world of drakons and those who want to capture and control them is her gift for psychometry—the ability to glean more about an item by touching it. In this case, my heroine has a real affinity for books. And it just so happens that the bad guys in the book, a group who call themselves the Knights of the Dragon, are in need of her particular skills.
So there you have it. As an author, I create my world and fill it with enough reality to bring it to life for the reader, while allowing the characters to remain the primary focus. In this case, I had to research New York City, the Cascade Mountains, private planes, librarians, and psychometry. It’s all in a day’s work.
