It doesn’t help that Jaxon’s father is on a witch hunt for Rebel sympathizers and Bryn finds herself in his line of fire.

✿ A MATTER OF FATE (Fate, #1)

Chloe Lilywhite struggles with all the normal problems of a typical seventeen-year-old high school student. Only, Chloe isn’t a normal teenage girl. She’s a Magical, part of a secret race of beings who influence the universe. More importantly, she’s a Creator, which means Fate mapped out her destiny long ago, from her college choice, to where she will live, to even her job. While her friends and relatives relish their future roles, Chloe resents the lack of say in her life, especially when she learns she’s to be guarded against a vengeful group of beings bent on wiping out her kind. Their number one target? Chloe, of course.

That’s nothing compared to the boy trouble she’s gotten herself into. Because a guy she’s literally dreamed of and loved her entire life, one she never knew truly existed, shows up in her math class, and with him comes a twin brother she finds herself inexplicably drawn to.

Chloe’s once unyielding path now has a lot more choices than she ever thought possible.

To complicate matters, he fell in love long ago with a girl in his dreams, one he’s never told anyone about, including his twin brother.

Mama Says:
First of all, if you’re new to the series, you might want to skip the rest of the blurbs in order to avoid tiny spoilers.  Fair warning, I’m about to fangirl hard y’all.  Because I’m a huge lover of fantasy series that build and grow as the books go on, and of surprises and shocks along the way.  I love when a series ages with its readers and think Fate does exactly that.  Hence why past the first 1 1/2 books they are labeled New Adult instead of Young Adult.
Heather Lyons takes your heart and rubs it a bit, then warms it up, then rips it out and smashes it to pieces, making you beg for recovery.  Her writing writhes under your skin and won’t leave you until you re-read it.  Again and again.  I’m obsessed with her ability to take clichés and tired tropes and spin them into a complicated web of poetry and emotion.  She makes you think you’re going to read a light fluffy fantasy romance and then kicks you in the lady balls.  More than once.
In book 1, we get a good introduction to the characters, but only a little bit of information about what all is going on in the Magical world and how Chloe and the Whitecombs play into the whole of it.  I thought I needed more information but honestly this series does a good job of steadily feeding you what you need to move forward while hinting at more to come.
Each book sees more complicated relationships, more complex maneuvers, and more magic and fighting and general chaos.  I enjoyed the varied pacing, and the lack of tedium for the most part.  If you’re needing something to binge read (though I admit I whipped through these books way too quickly) then you can get the entire series now!  No waiting, the best way to read!

As for #myFatepower, I’d like to have the ability to feel rested without actually sleeping so I have more time for all.the.things.

amatterofheart✿ A MATTER OF HEART (Fate, #2)

No longer in high school, Chloe Lilywhite is now living and working in Annar, the Magicals’ city-state plane of existence. Since moving, she’s joined the Council, gone on missions with the Guard, moved into her own apartment, and enrolled at the University of Annar. Plus, she’s happily engaged to be married to Jonah Whitecomb, the literal man from her dreams, not to mention her Connection. While she still struggles with aspects of her craft, Chloe feels like she’s finally coming into her own, especially after a difficult year that had her questioning nearly everything in her life.

After a brutal attack by the Elders, her life is turned upside down once more. Accusations fly throughout the Council and Guard, forcing Chloe to confront her worst fears about what’s she’s capable of as a Creator. And then there’s the matter of Kellan Whitecomb, Jonah’s twin brother and Chloe’s ex, who resurfaces after disappearing months before. Although Chloe chose Jonah, and despite their best efforts, the two find it hard to stay away from one another.

But no matter what Fate throws at her, Chloe is determined to take charge of her life, even as it begins to spiral out of control.

amatteroftruth✿ A MATTER OF TRUTH (Fate, #3)

Not long ago, Chloe Lilywhite seemingly had it all: a prized spot on the Magicals’ Council as lead Creator, a loving fiancé and Connection, and a wealth of good friends. But the poised young woman she projected was nothing more than a façade. Her parents all but disowned her. Power plays and accusations of murder within the Council rocked her confidence. And most difficult of all, her secret, a secondary Connection to Jonah’s twin brother, Kellan, became painfully impossible to resist. Desperate to gain control over her rapidly unraveling existence, Chloe did the unthinkable: she ran away.

Now living and working in Alaska under an alias, Chloe is slowly discovering who she is and, more importantly, who she wants to be. But the more she tries to leave the Magical world behind, the harder it becomes to stay hidden. The Elders are back with a vengeance, and the stakes have never been higher. Chloe finally has to make a choice: embrace her pre-ordained Fate or pave her own way in the worlds. One thing’s for sure, though—she’s finally up for the challenge.

amatterofforever✿ A MATTER OF FOREVER (Fate, #4)

It all comes down to this . . .

Chloe Lilywhite has struggled for years to find her footing in a series of dangerous and demanding worlds. Creator, first tier Council member, and one of the most powerful Magicals in existence, she was little more than one of Fate’s pawns. But now, Chloe is back home and ready to call the shots. She knows what she wants and who she wants to be.

Except the Elders never got the memo.

Annar and Magical-kind are under attack. The lives of Chloe’s loved ones, and life as they know it, are at stake. Chloe’s the key to taking the Elders down, but they won’t go quietly into the night.

This time, neither will Chloe.

How to Research For Writing A Novel

By Jolene Haley

Writing involves a lot of research. It depends on what you’re writing, really, to know exactly what kind of research you may need to do.

For example, if you’re writing a historical romance, you’d probably want to read some books from that time to see how things worked and how people spoke. You’d want to look at geographical maps and fashion and customs and I’d even go as far to look at things that were invented at the time, major world events—you get the picture.

If you were writing a suspense novel involving an F.B.I. agent who is in hot pursuit of a criminal, I’d take the time to watch some true crime documentaries. I’d spend time on the F.B.I. website, look up books written by former F.B.I. agents, and I’d also take time to look through hot suspense thrillers on the market—see what makes them great so you can understand what works well, what doesn’t, and how you can set yourself apart.

But what kind of research goes into making a Pizzathology? Yep, that’s right, our new anthology called A Pizza My Heart that involves fifteen diverse authors and stories that revolve around pizza.

Well, lucky for you our authors are here to tell you exactly how they prepared for their work!

Brett Jonas

Well, I live on a goat farm, so there wasn’t much research involved in my story, which has cute baby goats and pizza and kissing. (And if you’re reading this, Dad, I promise I didn’t research kissing in the barn!)

Jamie Adams

I tend to research by experience and variety. Most of my book ideas come while I’m traveling, from my day job, or while I’m engaged in new, challenging activities. For visual inspiration I, like most everyone, scroll through Pinterest and various art/photography sites, and sometimes I even use things like textiles, food, and music to inspire my world building and culture development. My favorite research method, though, is asking really smart people for info on just about everything!

Rebecca Waddell

Google and picking my friends’ brains are my favorite forms of research. My story involves freeganism which I first learned about from my friend in college who spent several months eating mainly food she found in dumpsters around town.

Jolene Haley

Most of my story preparation came from reading and watching too many horror things, watching TV shows like Gossip Girl, The X-Files, Stranger Things, and binge eating pizza for “research.” 10/10 would do it again.

What is your favorite way to prepare for writing something that requires research? Let us know in the comments below—we’d love to hear suggestions or your process.

A Pizza My Heart pizzathology comes out February 9th and you can enter to win a $20 Amazon gift card and a free copy of the book. Check it out on Amazon for less than the cost of an actual pizza!

Author Bio:

J. Kowallis, the only girl of four children, grew up in northern Utah with a head full of wild stories (most often unreal). At the age of 9, she wrote her first poem, a dedication to E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. It was so intriguing, her third grade teacher requested to keep the original. Between living in various fictional worlds, and spending time on her studies, she managed to graduate from Weber State University’s creative writing program. She now lives in Utah with her Mini Schnauzer, Etta, and spends most of her time still bouncing between this world and the fantastical while enjoying delectable über-dark chocolate and lavender baths. She enjoys dreaming about, flying to, and writing about distant lands (real or unreal).

Being a Sentinel isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens.

Sure, jumping through books into the world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.

And if that isn’t enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.

Maybe. If she survives.

Mama Says:
A fun, fast paced urban fantasy with some elements of sci-fi, the Library Jumpers will entertain young and old alike.  Although the first book was somewhat beleaguered with young adult clichés, these fall away by the second book and you’re so swept up in the story that they don’t bother you nearly as much, or that’s how it worked for me anyway.
I am a gigantic fan of libraries and traveling, so reading about all these places was a reminder that I have many new things still to try and many new cultures to learn more about.  I found that I rather liked Gia more in this book than in the first, and that I got more of the character development that I was hoping for as well.
Though teenage saviors might be a dime a dozen, what makes Gia stand out is her realistic reactions, the fact that she knew in many ways she was not like other people already, and the fact she knew about aspects of the Sentinel life, even if she would not admit it.  So although she’s thrust in to the action rather abruptly in book 1, she’s learned a lot by the time we get to Guardian of Secrets, and is starting to see the bigger picture.  I can only hope this continues in the next installment.
Drake gives us brief descriptions of some places to allow for the dialogue to take precedence, and I found I rather enjoyed when she gave herself time to linger in a place long enough to go into further detail.  Pacing might be my only complaint really, that it would speed through scene after scene only to sort of a stall a couple times where nothing much happened.  And when that’s the only issue, I am going to keep reading.  In this case with a reward in the doing so.  I highly recommend these books to any teen urban fantasy fans, and anyone who loves libraries like I do!

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world’s most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik’s world and her own, before both are destroyed.

Brenda Drake is a New York Times bestselling author of Thief of Lies (Library Jumpers #1), Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2), Touching Fate (Fated Series #1), and Cursing Fate (Fated Series #2). She hosts workshops and contests for writers such as Pitch Wars and Pitch Madness on her blog, and holds Twitter pitch parties on the hashtag, #PitMad. Halfway Witchy Series by Terry Maggert

As with the rest of the series thus far, we get wry humor and supernatural mystery.  In this book, though, things take a bit of a darker tone.  The stakes are higher after the events of Halfway Bitten, and Carlie becomes the target, though she’s not exactly a wilting lily.  Also more waffles.  Of course.  I have to admit that there was a point in the book where it seemed like the narrator was very tired or sick, or maybe it was just muffled for some reason, but otherwise it was still a fantastic performance.  There’s Gran, there’s the boys starting to surround Carlie, and the witch herself, using her powers to right wrongs, and sometimes not having the best aim.  If you’re a fan of urban fantasy you’ll love this series!

Dragon Springs Road by Janie Chang is a beautifully written historical fiction novel steeped in Chinese folklore and racial tension. #tlcbooktour

About Dragon Springs Road
• Paperback: 400 pages
• Publisher: William Morrow Paperbacks (January 10, 2017)

From the author of Three Souls comes a vividly imagined and haunting new novel set in early 20th century Shanghai—a story of friendship, heartbreak, and history that follows a young Eurasian orphan’s search for her long-lost mother.

That night I dreamed that I had wandered out to Dragon Springs Road all on my own, when a dreadful knowledge seized me that my mother had gone away never to return . . .

In 1908, Jialing is only seven years old when she is abandoned in the courtyard of a once-lavish estate near Shanghai. Jialing is zazhong—Eurasian—and faces a lifetime of contempt from both Chinese and Europeans. Without her mother’s protection, she can survive only if the estate’s new owners, the Yang family, agree to take her in.

Jialing finds allies in Anjuin, the eldest Yang daughter, and Fox, an animal spirit who has lived in the haunted courtyard for centuries. But Jialing’s life as the Yangs’ bondservant changes unexpectedly when she befriends a young English girl who then mysteriously vanishes.

Always hopeful of finding her long-lost mother, Jialing grows into womanhood during the tumultuous early years of the Chinese republic, guided by Fox and by her own strength of spirit, away from the shadows of her past. But she finds herself drawn into a murder at the periphery of political intrigue, a relationship that jeopardizes her friendship with Anjuin and a forbidden affair that brings danger to the man she loves.

Mama Says:
Beautifully written, this historical drama is rife with emotion and touches of the unexplainable.  I loved the infusion of myth into the tale, and found the author’s style to be rather comforting even when the subject matter turned bleak.
True to form we have many factual references to this time in China’s history sprinkled throughout the narrative, and I found myself getting deeply connected to our main character as the story did unfold.  Although I do wish some of the secondary characters had been explored a bit further, for the most part the characters which played vital roles had a life of their own.
The loneliness of childhood is a common theme, but one given a unique perspective by Chang’s hand.  I greatly admired the insightful way in which the author showed us many different sides of prejudice, from the very young to the very old, male or female, it could often come down to a person being afraid of what they don’t understand, and this is one of the many things Jiang doesn’t go along with.  I loved that about her.  Her spirit carries you on a timely journey through her life, showing you what it could be like to be different, and how very wrong we are when we treat people as less than.
I highly recommend to any literary fiction or historical fiction fans.
