Second chance romance, family drama and tension to keep you reading late into the night- read my @tlcbooktours review of Surrender My Heart by LG O’connor

About Surrender My Heart

Series: Caught Up in Love (Book 3)

Publisher: Collins-Young Publishing LLC (February 6, 2018)

Follow up to the 2017 Kindle Scout Winner, Shelter My Heart

Do you remember your first love in high school? What if you never stopped?

For decades, Katherine “Kitty” McNally has secretly loved John Henshaw, the man lying shot and unconscious in the hospital bed next to her. Then again, maybe not so secretly. Those closest to her, including her soon-to-be ex-husband, have suspected it for years. Their story ended with a gunshot wound the last time, too. Life seems to have taken her full circle, but only the dead know the secrets she still keeps.

Detective John Henshaw fell in love with his “Kat” the moment she became his geometry tutor in high school. When they graduated, he thought their future was sealed. Wrong. Enter life’s nonstop curveballs. The worst two moments of his life were the two times he lost Kat. After thirty-five years and one failed marriage trying to forget her, he can’t escape the fact that he’s never stopped loving her. Maybe it’s just his ego, but he could swear he sees a spark of love in her eyes every time she looks at him. That’s what keeps him in the New Jersey town that holds his most painful memories. That’s why he accepted his place decades ago as a family friend to the McNally sisters.

As John recovers from his injuries in Kitty’s care, she has one last chance to confront her past and rekindle their love–if John can forgive her once he learns the truth.

Apparently I’m deep in the middle of a new obsession: second chance romance. Who would have thought a book with a sweet looking couple on the cover would take me on such a journey of emotions that I’d need seven boxes of caramel cookies after? Surrender my Heart delves into far more than just will they or won’t they. It winds a path through grief, makes a stop on the family drama train, and even makes a stop in the crime family department. It’s a page-turning, tear-jerking decidedly feminine view of what ifs. I had some issues with some of the language which I’ll discuss on my blog, but this was a gripping book full of tension and despair and just enough hope to keep you reading. 3.5 stars and an absolutely huge thanks to @tlcbooktours and for the review opportunity! To go into my issues with the language, there may be some very slight spoilers, so I’ve kept my brief review above for those that wish to avoid said spoilers.
In a particular scene at a gay club that is a front for illegal activities, there is some very homophobic language which was beyond uncomfortable for me.  Honestly, this would have been a 4 or even 4.5 star read, but between this and some problematic language when Kitty confronts her husband, I was quite put off and thus lowered my rating.  I think it’s entirely possible to include characters who are uncomfortable with someone’s sexuality or certain sexual acts in a sensitive way.  Again, I am being vague to not completely point out some plot points in question, but the writing otherwise kept me engrossed in the story and I was able to move past these bits, even though they were always in the back of my mind.
My favorite parts of the story were the past reminisces of the beginnings of Shaw and Kat’s relationship.  Those were so sweet and I absolutely adored Vera.  Can I have an aunt like her please?

Again, while I personally wasn’t comfortable with this language, other readers certainly may not be bothered by it, and thus, as with all my complaints, I urge you to judge for yourself what you are and are not comfortable with and proceed from there.
